Hopefully there will be an MT option.
I don't want any 15 year old car that isn't stick. Maintaining an old DCT will suck...

where's the clutch?

Fun fact, dual clutch transmissions (As long as the software is good) will probably be more reliable than single clutch trans thanks to the dual nature of the clutch

Make it, give it a stick, and I'll be knocking down the door of my local Audi dealer to get one.

Dual clutches take the same stress as a normal clutch, but divides it by two. And so many of these clutches are so called "Sealed transmissions" meaning that they have literal life long fluid. Porsche's PDK is the shining example of reliability, and due to their new place in the VW group, I can assume any DCT from them will be just as good

True the DCTs are probably going to be better in the long run than the single clutch sequential transmissions.
I would still prefer holding cars with a stick long term due to the simplicity of the traditional manual transmission. There are no hydraulic lines to deal with!

Well, transmission fluids are still important in normal manuals. Which, why is it so much more expensive than any other fluid a car uses?
Manuél Ferrari

I dunno why it's so much more expensive!
I was not referring to the transmission fluid but the hydraulic lines that make the gear changes possible. I'm assuming that the gear change mechanism is the same as a single clutch sequential transmission? My dad has experience dealing with single clutch sequential transmission issues. There was a hydraulic leak that was causing the car to not shift gears.
With a traditional stick your arm changes the gears so as long as your arm is working you're all good!

Oh I know that well haha. My dad has a single clutch E46 M3, and I drive an S2000 with a 6 speed. I'm no slouch :P

a. The Germans have been touting life-long gearbox fluids for two-plus decades now, and while it's certainly long lasting, life-long has proven to be a misnomer most of the time.
b. Each clutch is still used on every shift, I'm not sure how that's really dividing the stress in half.
c. Additional moving parts and complexity + "sealed" = big repair bills when the time comes, which will come at some point no matter how reliable a transmission is
d. They've proven very reliable so far, yes, but they're not particularly old and the sample size just isn't that huge. Transmission failures aren't common early in a car's life; they're a high-mileage failure item
I'm not saying they're unreliable or more/less unreliable than a conventional transmission, but to call them more reliable, especially at this point, is presumptuous, as best.

The S2000 is probably a good car to keep for a long time.
My requirements for long-term ownership are:
6MT
Not electric power steering
N/A
Not overly complex
The one car I own now that I'm planning on holding a long time is a Porsche 997.2 6MT C2. It's really simple for a modern luxury sports car. The headlights turn on/off manually. The parking brake is traditional. The engine is N/A and the power steering is hydraulic and not over boosted. I haven't had a single mechanical issue or glitch at all. It will hit 50,000 miles soon and runs just as strong as when I got it with 12,000 miles.
The only issue I had was with the factory nav/radio head unit. It was replaced under warranty so hopefully it will last a while.

Honda knows how to make the worlds best sports car. They just... don't. Which is frustrating. The S2000 has amazing steering feel, brakes, enough power for the car, and looks that last.

I don't get the on again off again approach than Honda and Toyota take to sports cars.
It's so much better to be consistent.

It's all of their crazy business dealings. The S2000 I think went away due to the crash, but now that toyota and everyone are all back in the small sports car game, I think they realize they need a new performance car in that vain.

They should gut out the recessions. They lose fans to other brands when they cease production.
Imagine if the Supra had been made continuously from the 90s to now. It might be outselling the Corvette or 911 right now.

01/02/2014 at 01:51 | 0 |
True, but the rarity of the Supra turbo has also helped it's popularity. Btw, I forgot to mention it, but I am very jealous of your 911

I think the rarity has helped the cult status of the old car for sure. Used values would have been lower if the car didn't cease production. But new car sales would have been profitable for the company and created a halo effect.
The 911 is a cool car. If you like the 997 the 997.1 cars are getting more attainable by the day. You can get a 997.1 for under $40K now. I wonder how low the prices will go before they bottom.
The standard Carrera isn't super fast in a straight line compared to other cars you can get for the price. But seems like you know the value of having a balanced car too. The C2 never over powers its chassis. It's always predictable.
